Meanwhile, the Buick Envision is Coming to America

(EDITOR'S NOTE: Article updated with official statements from GM.)

Well that was quick. The rollercoaster ride that is the Chevrolet Bolt's production cycle has encountered another dip as the Bow Tie brand has confirmed that the 2027 model—which just entered production this month—will end production next year, just 18 months after launching.

According to Bloomberg (sub required), the Bolt's latest cancellation is due to restructuring of GM's global production plans. The gas-powered Buick Envision is built in China, and thus hit with tariffs. It will move to the Fairfax, Kansas plant where the Bolt is built, bringing an end to the revived electric car according to Bloomberg. Back in 2025, Chevrolet also said it intended to move gas Equinox production to the same facility; currently, the Equinox is produced in Mexico.

In a statement to AutoGuide, a GM spokesperson didn't outright confirm the timeline, but reinforced the temporary nature of this reborn Bolt. "When we revealed Bolt in October, we said it'd be a limited-run model, which we are bringing back due to strong customer demand. We also said it would account for the majority of EV volume for Chevrolet in 2026, alongside the Chevrolet Equinox EV. We reiterate that today."

Complicating matters, since Chevrolet announced the Bolt's return following its original 2023 discontinuation, the federal tax credit program has ended. At $28,995, including destination, the 2027 Bolt will still be the most affordable EV in America, but we've already seen a slump in EV sales in Q4 of last year following the program wrapping up. (In Canada, the Kia EV4 will slightly undercut the Bolt, but its US launch is on pause.)

The 2027 Chevrolet Bolt is essentially a heavily revised version of the 2023 Bolt EUV, with tweaked styling, a lithium-ion-phosphate (LFP) battery pack, a North American Charging Standard (NACS) port, and over 260 miles (418 kilometers) of range. Its electric motor is now shared with the Equinox EV, and with this being modern Chevy, the updated infotainment system has no Apple CarPlay or Android Auto functionality.

Just for reference: the Envision's best sales year this decade has been 47,340 units in America in 2024, and starts from $42,995 including destination. The original Bolt sold 62,045 units in 2023, its final year of production.

"General Motors will onshore production of the next-generation Buick compact SUV to Fairfax Assembly in Kansas City, beginning in 2028," a spokesperson told AutoGuide. "This decision further strengthens GM’s domestic manufacturing footprint and supports U.S. jobs, building on $5.5 billion in new investments announced across our U.S. manufacturing sites in the last year. Additional product and timing details will be shared closer to launch."

While I’m not on the side of the Mfgs, I can understand not wanting to invest billions in tooling and facilities to make a vehicle nobody wants to buy. EVs will become hot again with solid state batteries - assuming they live up to the hype. If I can charge in 10 mins and get roughly 1000 miles - I’m in. I’d say goodbye to my diesel truck in an instant. No more Def, oil changes, gear oils, coolants, brakes (well frequency of changes), etc…. Sign me up

    How ignorant.

So they are selling a car with no resale value because they told the public it is going to be discontinued in a year.

This is GM in a nutshell, no common sense.
