The Toyota RAV4 Prime is the plug-in hybrid version of this popular compact SUV. Unlike most hybrids, the Prime focuses on performance as much as it does fuel savings. With a total of 302 hp on tap, the RAV4 PHEV is one of the most powerful mainstream compact SUVs available today regardless of powertrain.

When launched there wasn’t much competition for this vehicle, but a host of rivals have appeared from Hyundai, Kia, and Mitsubishi to name a few.

Toyota RAV4 Plug-in Hybrid Overview

The Toyota RAV4 Plug-in Hybrid, formerly known as the RAV4 Prime, continues to offer a blend of all-electric and hybrid driving. It features a manufacturer-estimated 42 miles of EV-only range and a 38 mpg combined fuel economy rating when operating in hybrid mode. The vehicle’s 302-horsepower system allows it to accelerate from 0 to 60 mph in 5.5 seconds. Standard electronic all-wheel drive ensures traction across different driving conditions.

What's New for 2025

For 2025, the RAV4 Plug-in Hybrid undergoes a name change for easier powertrain identification. The Toyota logo on the front and rear no longer features a blue accent, and the model now carries a PHEV badge. The vehicle is available in SE and XSE trims, offering features such as heated front seats, a standard Toyota Audio Multimedia system, and an available 10.5-inch touchscreen with JBL premium audio. New exterior color options expand customization choices.

The RAV4 Plug-in Hybrid supports Level 1 and Level 2 charging, with a full recharge taking approximately 2.5 hours on a Level 2 charger. Safety remains a priority with Toyota Safety Sense 2.5+ and standard driver assistance features. The 2025 model is expected to arrive in dealerships in late 2024 with an MSRP starting at $43,865.

2021 Toyota RAV4 PHEV First Drive Review: Plug-In Power

The RAV4 is now the de facto face of Toyota’s hybrid movement—and the Prime is the best electrified vehicle it’s made yet.

Toyota’s compact crossover was its best-selling model in Canada and the USA last year. Not counting pickups, it was also the chart-topper for passenger vehicles on both sides of the border. The hybrid version has overtaken the Prius as the top-selling electrified model in the Japanese automaker’s lineup too, and Toyota is bolstering its success with a new range-topper for 2021, this here RAV4 Prime.

The Prime adds a plug to the hybrid crossover recipe, with the twin benefits of more power and better fuel efficiency. It pushes the price of the compact crossover even further up, but if you can swing the extra cash—and can find one, given its relative rarity—the Prime is the RAV4 to have.
