2024 Hyundai Tucson N Line Hybrid Review: Quick Take

Or: Everything N Its Right Place.

Hybrids stopped being solely about fuel efficiency ages ago. Nowadays, it’s a real have-baked-good, will-consume affair: often, buyers are getting that traditional advantage alongside better performance than a pure-gas choice. With the price gap between the two so small, it’s become something of a no-brainer to go electrified, so long as the latter was available.

For 2024, Hyundai has expanded the electrified Tucson family with this, the 2024 Tucson N Line Hybrid. We got a brief stint in the compact SUV as part of the Automobile Journalists Association of Canada (AJAC) annual TestFest to see how it fits into the family.

2022 Hyundai Tucson Plug-in Review: Quick Take

The Hyundai Tucson PHEV finished second in our recent 2022 AutoGuide Compact SUV Comparison test presented by NRS brakes.

This is thanks to its status as an all-around performer. In short, it does everything well. From its edgy, eye-catching exterior design to its loaded interior and strong on-road performance, Combine with that a great efficiency score, and the Tucson PHEV is tough to beat. Its corporate cousin, the all-new Kia Sportage bested the Tucson in our comparison, but the margin was small. Most of all, it didn’t impact our positive impressions of the Hyundai.

On the styling front, the Tucson could be viewed as somewhat polarizing. While its design isn’t my favourite in the test, I applaud Hyundai’s aggressive approach. Will its bold grille and “hidden” LED daytime running lights be to everyone’s taste? No, but I think that may be the point. If the aim is to stand out, some may not come along for the ride. But I commend Hyundai for not following the path of least resistance with more samey-SUV styling. Among its rivals in this test, one’s eyes are drawn to the Tucson, which is a win for Hyundai’s design team, in my view.

Best Small SUV | Testing (almost) Every Compact SUV

Welcome to the single most important comparison we will have all year. The AutoGuide 2022 Best Small SUV Comparison sponsored by NRS Brakes.

The average family car these days isn’t even a car at all anymore. Compact SUVs are the sweet spot these days, selling thousands of examples every single day in Canada and the United States. So we’ve assembled 11 of them, from all corners of the market, to figure out which one is best. Yes, eleven. Go big or go home, they say. It’s time for AutoGuide 2022 Best Small SUV Comparison.

This group covers all the big hitters, including the segment-leading Toyota RAV4 and Honda CR-V. Mazda sent us two SUVs, in the shapes of the subtly different CX-5 and CX-50. More rugged options like the Ford Bronco Sport and Jeep Compass are here, too. Amongst the pack are of course a few hybrids as well. If you’re shopping this part of the market, at least a few of these SUVs will be on your short list.

2022 Hyundai Tucson Hybrid Review: Stylin’ On You

I think something might be stuck to the front bumper.

Fear not, now-panicked PR person reading this: nothing harmed the 2022 Hyundai Tucson Hybrid while I drove it. But on a Friday at rush hour, as the second child stops in the crosswalk to point directly at me, I get worried. In both instances, the parents nudge them along, but once they’re curbside, they turn around to check the Tucson out, too.

Compact crossovers might be the four-wheeled equivalent of bran flakes, such is their ubiquity. But with the Tucson, Hyundai is making a strong play for them to be cool—and for this to be the new leader of the class.

Hyundai Tucson Hybrid vs Ford Escape PHEV Comparison

Do you need a plug?

There are a lot of differences between these two fuel-sipping family crossovers, the Hyundai Tucson Hybrid and Ford Escape PHEV. One has a turbocharged engine, one does not. One is front-drive, one is AWD. A traditional automatic contrasts with an electric CVT. They’re even opposite hues.

But it’s the Ford’s little outlet, just aft of the driver-side front wheel arch, that defines this head-to-head. Gas isn’t getting any cheaper, and the idea of emissions-free motoring, even just on short drives, is an appealing one. Managing editor Mike Schlee and I spent a week with both to figure out if plug-in power is worth the extra cash outlay.

Hyundai Tucson Hybrid vs Toyota RAV4 Hybrid Comparison: Fuel-Sipping Family Haulers

Hyundai’s coming at the king.

The Toyota RAV4 has been the best-selling non-pickup in the US and Canada for years now. In America, the Hyundai Tucson was ninth—not overall, but in the compact crossover class. Toyota sold nearly three and a half times the number of RAV4s: 430,387 to 123,657.

Those are the overall figures; what’s more impressive is how around 28 percent of RAV4s are the hybrid model, a number that is consistently climbing. More over, the split would be even higher if Toyota could build ’em fast enough. There are waitlists: clearly, the RAV4 Hybrid is the desirable one.

It's great to know that automatic headlights are something I can count on when driving a Hyundai Tucson. I'm planning to go on a car show featuring used Hyundai cars later this year to see if I could find a good replacement for my current car. Having a convenient vehicle to use when travelling with my kids would help a lot in making them less bored during the trip.
