An all-new Hyundai Kona has arrived on the scene. Although many of the powertrain options are carry over items, the vehicle rides on a new platform.

It is larger inside and out than the previous model and wears more modern sheetmetal. Of course, there’s still plenty of choice with the Kona including drivetrains, engines, and even an all-electric option.

Pros

Budget-friendly pricing, an attractive interior design, raucous Kona N model

Cons

Styling isn't for everyone, tight second row, EV ain't cheap

Bottom Line

With a strong package of stand-out looks, high safety ratings, and affordable starting prices, the Kona is a sub-compact SUV that deserves to be on your short list.

Hyundai Kona vs Kia Seltos Comparison: Sub-Compact Siblings

Both Hyundai and Kia have spent the last few years breaking sales records and earning plaudits along the way.

What better segment for two of the most competitive brands to duke it out than the fastest-growing one?

The two brands took different approaches to the sub-compact SUV segment. The Kona was out the gate first, a pint-sized loveable weirdo that always felt like more of a hatchback on stilts. When Kia brought the Seltos to these shores a few years later, it anchored the lineup as a more rough-and-tumble SUV, offering heaps of space and tech for barely more money than the Soul.

2024 Hyundai Kona Electric Review: First Drive

The meteoric rise of the subcompact Kona SUV is one of the more intriguing stories of recent Hyundai history. Only on sale since 2018, this small crossover has become firmly entrenched as one of Hyundai’s bestsellers in North America. While it’s a top-five model in the U.S., it’s even more popular in Canada, where it has accounted for about 20 percent of the company’s business over the past five years.

With that much wind in its sales, Hyundai launched the second-generation Kona in September in gas-powered form, and now at year’s end, the all-new Kona Electric is beginning to land in dealers across the continent.

New Kona has a lot of good going for it—and a few oversights.

Hyundai has treated the Kona to a radical redesign for its second generation. With a futuristic new look to go along with a growth spurt, Kona 2.0 impressed us well enough on our recent first drive review. The small SUV segment has become incredibly competitive over the last couple years however, and while the Kona delivers on most fronts, it isn't without fault. Here we explore its three steps forward—and two back.

2024 Hyundai Kona Review: First Drive

Growing up: we all do it.

When Hyundai’s Kona burst onto the scene back in 2018, the world was a different place. The Tucson was still compact and the Venue wasn’t even a thing. The Kona was the Korean brand’s first volley into the subcompact SUV segment, its tidy footprint and quirky design making it a fun choice.

But just as the class itself has grown, so has the competition. What once seemed tidy now seems cramped, and thus the second-generation Kona debuts a much larger form for 2024. Is this a simple growth spurt, or has the Kona found more maturity with age?

2024 Hyundai Kona Debuts in New York

Hyundai’s sub-compact Kona SUV has been a strong seller since its arrival in 2018.

Based on its funky styling, strong feature count, and sporty demeanour, the little Hyundai quickly became one of the brand’s most popular offerings. Hyundai has just pulled the wraps off the 2024 Hyundai Kona that’s based on a new, larger platform that should address the outgoing model’s biggest failing: its interior size.
