The Honda Civic Si Walked so the Type R Could Run
I’ll admit it: there was initial disappointment when I found out I’d be driving a Civic Si instead of a Type R. And that was unfair.
As it turned out, the 2023 Civic Si was an almost-perfect car to handle Los Angeles and the surrounding area for the week of the auto show. While it would have been fun to test my theory that a Type R is just a little bit extra to live with in LA—I’m more of an Integra Type S person—the Si hit all the right notes.

First impressions matter—and the Civic Si didn’t make a good one.
It was over a year ago now, when we here at AutoGuide first got a taste of the latest Honda Civic Si on our home turf. The only problem was it was up against two of the finest front-drive performance machines around: the talented Volkswagen Golf GTI and the raucous Hyundai Elantra N. The deck was stacked against the Honda.
Compounding the issue, that Si spoke with a Canadian accent. We’ve detailed the differences between markets before, as there’s a surprising amount of changes for two cars sharing a badge. Or, the grass is always greener.
Despite what Letterkenny or South Park might lead you to believe, Canada is pretty darned similar to the US in most ways—especially our auto industry. You’ll find pretty much every car south of the border up north as well. Some might have trim name differences, or in the case of the Mitsubishi Outlander Sport (RVR) or Nissan Rogue Sport (Qashqai), entirely new names.

Honda Civic Si vs Volkswagen Golf GTI vs Hyundai Elantra N: Sport Compact Shootout
Fun, affordable, practical. It’s the car version of the Iron Triangle, but with sport compact cars, you don’t have to pick two qualities. Here, you’ve got all three.
The Honda Civic Si and Volkswagen Golf GTI are hardly unknowns. They’ve been on our roads, and in our hearts, for decades, melding compact car usefulness with added turns of speed and poise. Both saw new generations touch down in 2022, so naturally we’d have to get them together.
Then Hyundai crashed the party. The Elantra N is an altogether wilder proposition, the most hardcore small sedan we’ve seen. It doesn’t try to hide it, either. Pumped up and featuring one of the best four-cylinder soundtracks out there, The Elantra N nonetheless continues Hyundai’s tradition of serious value for money. We already know it’s good on the track, but can it impress in the real world?
2022 Honda Civic Si First Drive: Five Things We Learned
The 2022 Honda Civic Si follows the old formula of making a Civic fun: It has more power, a sport suspension, racey red interior bits, and a manual transmission. But is the car really fun or too tame?
The new Si wears the latest Civic’s more serious and arguably better-looking skin. The robotic mantis styling is gone, replaced with more simple lines and scowling headlamps. The last car’s fake plastic vents are also gone, and overall the new Si looks more purposeful and refined. Yet it retains some of the fussiness of the previous generation, including a few awkward kinks and creases.
In this trim the car sports the classic red Si badge, a honeycomb grille, blacked-out window trim, blacked-out 18-inch wheels, and dual exhaust pipes. All the cars at the Honda Si release event were slathered in rusty orange (brown? bronze? brorange?) paint, giving them a warm yet spooky autumnal glow that made me wonder if the release was originally scheduled for Halloween. Orange is my favorite color so I may be biased, but I absolutely loved it. The car is also available in a rich metallic blue that contrasts the red accents nicely. Overall the new Civic Si gives off sophisticated vibes. The look will appeal to a more grown-up crowd, but some fans may miss the wild flair of the previous generation.
