What Are Skid Plates and Why Do I Need Them?

Skid plates are protective metal plates or panels installed on the undercarriage of a vehicle that are designed to shield important components from damage caused by rocks, debris, and rough terrain.

Skids are factory components on some vehicles and are a common upgrade for four-wheel-drive enthusiasts who have 4x4s and are looking to protect their vehicle’s vitals such as the engine, transmission, transfer case, fuel tank, and other vulnerable parts. We consider skid plates vital for hardcore off-roaders and, while optional for those subjecting their 4x4s to less difficult terrain, they should be considered important across the board.

Off-road Protection:

When driving off-road, especially on uneven or rocky terrain, the undercarriage of a vehicle is susceptible to damage from rocks, tree roots, and other obstacles. Skid plates act as a barrier between the ground and vital components, preventing damage that could otherwise lead to costly repairs. We recently installed skid plates from Talons Garage on our project Lexus GX460 with protection in mind, and protection along as the motivating factor. However, the benefits extend beyond protection.

In conjunction with the traction provided by tires and the articulation of the vehicle’s suspension, skids can help a vehicle make their way over or around obstacles that it otherwise may get completely hung up on.
