Volvo’s electric march continues with the 2026 Volvo ES90. While it replaces the gas-powered S90 in some markets, the ES90 will be sold alongside its combustion-powered sibling in others.

Key Points

  • The 2026 Volvo ES90 blends sedan styling with a practical hatchback design, offering luxury, space, and cutting-edge technology.
  • Available with up to 670 horsepower, all-wheel drive, and up to 435 miles of range, the ES90 delivers fast charging and an 800-volt architecture for quick top-ups.
  • Featuring a 14.5-inch touchscreen, Google-built software, Nvidia AI computing, and advanced driver-assistance systems, the ES90 sets a new standard for digital luxury in an EV.

I'm going to be honest with you: I do not find the ES90 attractive or appealing; my adoration for the V90 will not allow it.

Anyways, Volvo says the ES90 lives in a class of its own because it resembles a sedan and yet offers the practicality of a hatchback with crossover-like proportions.

The ES90 is a modern Volvo through and through. Its signature design elements include Thor’s Hammer LED headlights, a minimalist grille, and C-shaped taillights that extend into the rear hatch glass. Unlike a traditional sedan, the hatchback design provides added practicality, with 25.9 cubic feet of cargo space when the rear seats are folded down. Even with the seats up, there’s 17.5 cubic feet of storage—more than many sedans. Volvo also includes a front trunk with an additional 1.7 cubic feet of space, which is about the same amount of space as a mini fridge.

Built on Volvo’s SPA2 platform, which it shares with the EX90, the ES90 measures 122 inches between the wheels, slightly longer than the EX90’s wheelbase. Despite this, its overall length of 16.4 feet makes it shorter than its SUV sibling, while a ground clearance of 8.0 inches helps retain some crossover capability.

Inside, the ES90 follows Volvo’s recent tech-forward approach, featuring a 14.5-inch vertically oriented touchscreen that controls nearly all functions, including four-zone climate control and a 25-speaker Bowers & Wilkins audio system. A 9.0-inch digital display mounted to the steering column serves as the instrument cluster, and a head-up display projects key information onto the windshield.

The interior is almost entirely button-free, aside from steering wheel controls and window switches, making it one of Volvo’s most digitally focused vehicles to date. Upholstery options include sustainable materials, and every ES90 includes a panoramic glass roof with the option for electrochromic glass that adjusts transparency for shade or sunlight.

Rear passengers enjoy 4.2 inches of knee clearance and 37.8 inches of headroom, ensuring a spacious and comfortable ride for all.

Volvo claims that the ES90 is its most powerful car, not in terms of horsepower, but in computing capability. The EV features a dual Nvidia Drive AGX Orin processor setup capable of handling 500 trillion operations per second. According to Volvo’s Chief Engineer Anders Bell, this "core computing capacity" allows the brand to enhance safety, performance, and AI-driven features through software updates.

As for actual motive power, the ES90 will be available in three different powertrain configurations. Single Motor (RWD) models offer 329 horsepower and 354 lb-ft of torque from a 92.0-kWh battery pack, which should deliver an estimated WLTP range of 400 miles. Twin Motor (AWD) cars deliver 442 horsepower and 494 lb-ft of torque from a larger 106.0-kWh battery pack, which should be good for 435 miles.

Lastly, the Twin Motor Performance ES90 will have 670 horsepower and 635 lb-ft of torque, from the same larger battery pack. 0-60 mph in 3.9 seconds and an estimated WLTP range of 435 miles.

Volvo says that despite its higher power output, the Performance model maintains the same estimated range as the regular Twin Motor variant, thanks to efficient energy management and aerodynamics. Volvo claims the ES90 has the lowest drag coefficient (0.25 Cd) of any vehicle in its history, helping maximize efficiency. Probably true, considering the automaker's history of building boxes on wheels.

With its 800-volt architecture, the ES90 delivers some of the fastest charging speeds in its class. DC fast charging at 350 kW can add 186 miles of range in just 10 minutes and a 10-80% charge in as little as 20 minutes.

The Volvo ES90 is now available for order in select European markets, but U.S. availability remains unconfirmed. Pricing and EPA range estimates have yet to be released, though pricing is expected to start around $70,000.
