Toyota FJ Cruiser Revival Reportedly Just Days Away
According to a new report from Japan, Toyota could be days away from unveiling the long-rumored FJ Cruiser revival.
Key Points
- A new report from Japan claims the long-awaited Land Cruiser FJ will debut at a private event on October 20, followed by a global reveal in Japan on October 21
- The FJ will reportedly be about the same length as a Ford Bronco Sport, with U.S. models expected to offer hybrid options.
- Reports suggest it could ride on the TNGA-F platform shared with the Tacoma and Land Cruiser. A North American launch is expected after its 2026 production start.
The publication Mag-X claims the off-road SUV will be shown to members of the media on October 20 before making its global debut the following day at 5:00 a.m. local time in Japan (3:00 p.m. ET, October 20).
If accurate, the new FJ is expected to sit beneath the recently launched Land Cruiser in both size and price, marking Toyota’s return to the compact 4x4 space. Its return would come nearly two years after Toyota first teased it could build a smaller Land Cruiser during a global product presentation.
The Japanese report suggests the new model will use a naturally aspirated 2.7-liter four-cylinder engine, the same unit found in the entry-level Toyota Hilux pickup—that engine produces 163 horsepower and 181 pound-feet of torque.
Toyota is likely to offer more powerful and likely hybridized options in North America—the company’s 2.4-liter turbocharged four-cylinder is capable of producing up to 326 horsepower in hybrid form and could be a strong candidate for the U.S. version, although that might cause some crowding in the Toyota showroom when you consider the 4Runner, Land Cruiser, and Tacoma all use a version of that powertrain.
Dimensionally, the Land Cruiser FJ will reportedly measure 171.3 inches long, making it slightly shorter than the Corolla Cross and roughly the same length as the Ford Bronco Sport. This would place it firmly in the compact off-road SUV category, competing against models like the Bronco Sport and Jeep Compass Trailhawk.
The report suggests it could ride on the TNGA-F platform shared with the Tacoma and Land Cruiser.
The compact FJ is expected to carry traditional design cues, including round headlights, a boxy profile, and short overhangs, leaning into its trail-focused character. If Toyota follows through on the alleged schedule, the new FJ could appear publicly at the Japan Mobility Show next week, with production spooling up next year.

How many clowns get out of this one? Bit odd looking.
The suicide doors for rear seat entry was the best feature on the original. So, they eliminated them.
