Ram is officially preparing to re-engage with the midsize pickup segment, Stellantis CEO Antonio Filosa confirmed a 2027 launch of the long-awaited truck that will slot beneath the Ram 1500.

Key Points

  • Stellantis CEO Antonio Filosa says the new truck, designed in Detroit and built in Illinois, will arrive in 2027 to rival the Ford Ranger, Toyota Tacoma, and Chevy Colorado.
  • Expected to ride on a shortened STLA Frame platform, the pickup will support gas, plug-in hybrid, and fully electric options, with competitive towing and payload figures.
  • Unlike the South American-bound Dakota, the U.S. truck will likely debut with a new badge and four-door Crew Cab layout, targeting a starting price in the low-to-mid $30,000s.

The new model should be built in Belvidere, Illinois, although there is some speculation that it could roll out of the Toledo plant alongside the Jeep Wrangler and Gladiator—or even Warren Truck, which has underutilized capacity and was the Dakota's former home.

Filosa told the assembled audience at the Kepler Cheuvreux Autumn Conference that he recently visited Ram’s Detroit design center to check out a full-scale clay model of the new pickup. While staying tight-lipped on actual specifics, he praised the truck’s looks.

"Two weeks ago, it was in our design center in Detroit, and I saw the (truck) itself, not only the sketches and designs but the clay model. And it’s just beautiful," said Filosa.

What Platform and Powertrain Options Will Ram's Midsize Truck Offer?

According to Mopar Insiders, rather than using the unibody-focused STLA Large platform, the mid-size Ram is expected to arrive as a true body-on-frame truck, riding on a shortened version of Stellantis’ STLA Frame. It's the same platform that will underpin the Ram 1500 Ramcharger.

This flexible setup should allow for multiple powertrains: traditional combustion engines, plug-in hybrids, and even fully electric versions. Although you probably shouldn't hold your breath for an EV version, considering Ram literally just binned the electric 1500 truck.

What Will Ram Name Its Midsize Truck?

Ram has already confirmed plans to use the Dakota name on a separate South American pickup built in Argentina. It's still unclear if the U.S.-built truck will debut under a new name or resurrect the Dakota badge, which has been missing from our roads since 2011.

How Much Will The Ram Midsize Truck Cost?

Ram will need to be aggressive to carve out space in a crowded market. Industry people expect the base model to start in the low-to-mid $30,000s, which is about where the Toyota Tacoma and Ford Ranger both start. That should give the midsizer enough breathing room to avoid any cannibalization concerns with the base Ram 1500, which starts at $41,025 in 2026.
