Land Rover Just Built a Road-Legal Dakar Winner With 635-HP
Following its debut victory at the 2026 Dakar Rally, Land Rover has revealed the Defender Dakar. Presented as a design preview, the limited-production model adapts the hardware and geometry of the D7X-R competition vehicle into a road-legal format.
Drivetrain and Mechanical Upgrades
The Defender Dakar retains the core D7x architecture, transmission, and driveline shared between the Defender OCTA and the D7X-R race car. Power comes from a 4.4-liter twin-turbo V8 producing 635 PS (626 hp) and 750 Nm (553 lb-ft) of torque. Freed from the class restrictions imposed on the Dakar entry, the road vehicle incorporates an upgraded cooling system to manage the unrectified output.
Suspension modifications reflect the vehicle’s competition roots:
- Hardware: Coil-sprung suspension utilizing motorsport-spec Bilstein Advanced Dampers paired with wider track dimensions and increased ride height.
- Rolling Stock: 35-inch Advanced All-Terrain tires mounted on forged 20-inch wheels.
- Electronics: Terrain Response calibration gains dedicated Dunes and Gravel drive modes, along with the competition-derived Flight Mode designed to smooth heavy chassis landings over crests.
Exterior and Structural Modifications
Exterior changes prioritize durability, airflow, and underbody defense. The bodywork features extended riveted wheel arches, a carbon-fiber hood, and raised carbon-fiber air intakes.
Underbody protection is handled by a heavy-duty metal front undershield and full-length armor plating, while the exterior gains roof-mounted auxiliary light pods, a fixed metal roof, a tailgate blanking plate, and rear mud flaps. Color choices pay homage to the factory race livery with a signature Dakar Sand body and Yanbu Turquoise roof combination, alongside secondary shades available with an optional matte protective fil
Cabin and Layout
The interior adopts a functional 2+2 seating layout. Up front, custom-designed race seats anchor the cabin, with optional four-point harnesses. The rear cargo area is tailored for utility, featuring dedicated helmet storage alongside integrated mounts for a full-size spare tire and an air compressor.
Availability
Defender will open client reservations in early 2027, with final technical specifications scheduled for release alongside the 2027 Dakar Rally in Saudi Arabia.
