Jeep Announces The Eight-Speed Automatic Will Return To V6 Wranglers

With Tavares gone, Jeep is listening to what shoppers want.

For 2025, the brand is bringing back the optional TorqueFlite eight-speed automatic transmission for four-door Wranglers equipped with the standard 285 hp, 3.6-liter V6 engine. This announcement comes mere months after Jeep told us the six-speed manual would be the only gearbox available on V6 Wranglers.

The original decision was always extremely odd as it left the Wrangler's highest-volume engine divorced from its highest-volume transmission—not to mention the $4,500 upcharge for the eight-speed was also easy money in the bank. Stellantis was hoping to move people into the 270 hp turbocharged 2.0-liter inline-four paired with the automatic as a $2500 upgrade over the V6 with three pedals.

Jeep never really explained why it decided to drop eight-speed from the V6's repertoire— it's easy to imagine the decision came from the top down, similar to how the Hemi found itself dead across the rest of the Stellantis family. The brand said the combo's return was “fueled by the enthusiasm of the Jeep community.”

Returning as a $4,500 option, the TorqueFlite eight-speed is once again available across the Wrangler's engine spectrum, including the 2.0-liter turbocharged inline-four, the 470 hp 6.4-liter HEMI V8 in the Wrangler 392 or the 375 hp 4xe plug-in hybrid.

“In response to enthusiastic requests, we’re reintroducing the eight-speed automatic transmission for V6 Wrangler models, underscoring our commitment to freedom of choice, performance, and versatility for every adventure,” Jeep North America senior vice president and boss Bob Broderdorf said. “We deeply value our community’s passion and input.”

Orders for the V6 Wrangler with the eight-speed automatic are now open.

Sorry, but I can't get enthused about an automatic in a 4x4. Tends to turn it into a burger cruiser for soccer Mom's.
