Hyundai is recalling more than 42,000 vehicles in the United States due to a potential rollaway risk stemming from improperly routed wiring.

The recall affects specific 2025 Tucson and Santa Cruz models. These vehicles may unexpectedly shift out of Park, even without the brake pedal being pressed, posing a safety hazard.

The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) revealed the issue arises from the Console Extension Wiring Assembly near the transmission shift lever. During assembly, this wiring may have been incorrectly routed, increasing the risk of contact with the mechanical release for the shift lever lock. If contact occurs, it could disengage the lock and allow the transmission to shift out of Park unintentionally.

The recall covers Tucson models manufactured between June 20, 2024, and November 13, 2024, and Santa Cruz models built from July 22, 2024, to November 7, 2024. Hyundai discovered the problem in late October when a Tucson in the corporate fleet unexpectedly shifted out of Park. By November 8, the automaker identified the wiring assembly routing as the cause and issued the recall on November 13.

Owners of the affected vehicles can continue driving them but are advised to engage the parking brake whenever leaving the vehicle to prevent unintentional movement. Hyundai has instructed dealerships to reroute the console extension wiring assembly to resolve the issue. Notifications to owners and dealers will begin by January 19, 2025. Reimbursement is available for owners who previously paid for related repairs.
