Ford Owes People $1.3 Billion Tariff Refunds, Class-Action Suit Claims

A lawsuit filed in Michigan alleges that a California resident is owed rebates from Ford after the automaker passed on tariff fees to him when he purchased a Mustang Mach-E. Jason Bullock says that he bought his electric Ford in February, but the agreed-upon price reflected Ford having adjusted the numbers to account for President Trump's then-imposed tariff policy. Naturally, the pricing changed, even though Ford didn't acknowledge such.

The crux of the issue here is three-fold: 1) The Mach-E is built in Mexico, where tariffs are further imposed (or at least trying to be imposed) by the Trump Administration, 2) the tariffs were ruled illegal by the Supreme Court under the International Emergency Economic Powers Act (IEEPA), which says Trump's actions were outside his authority, and 3) the automaker is at fault for not making good on adjusting the price of the car. Complex situation, this is.

Ultimately, the government walked back its imposed tariffs, and companies like Ford owe their customers money they charged them but shouldn't have collected. Bullock's accusation and subsequent Class-Action lawsuit state just this, and it plays directly into his hands that Ford was reported to have received a $1.3 billion tariff benefit for duties paid between March 2025 and February 2026. In essence, the company collected taxes and increased fees and passed them on to the government, but now everyone has to give the money back.

The thing is, Ford hasn't actually done the whole giving the money back part. The Detroit News notes that the brand is aiming to use the money for Ford Blue and Ford Pro, which means they're working to use unfairly collected money to better their business rather than make good on people who have bought their vehicles.

We knew the tariffs would be a mess, and instances like this show the extent of that. Hopefully the wrongs are righted soon, on both Ford's and the government's parts.
