General Motors has expanded its recall for heavy-duty Chevrolet Silverado and GMC Sierra pickup trucks due to an issue with tailgates potentially opening unexpectedly.

The latest recall adds another 132,037 trucks from the 2024 model year to the previous 323,232 affected vehicles recalled earlier this year. Trucks included are Chevrolet Silverado HD and GMC Sierra HD 2500 and 3500 models equipped with power-locking manual tailgates.

Regardless of cab configuration or drive type, the issue stems from water intrusion into the power switch controlling the tailgate lock. This malfunction can cause the tailgate to unlock and potentially fall open.

The problem is particularly concerning when the truck bed is loaded with loose cargo or when towing a trailer. GM launched its expanded investigation following a report of a 2024 GMC Sierra HD 3500's tailgate opening and hitting a trailer tongue, causing damage. The investigation uncovered 237 field complaints about tailgates opening unexpectedly. Fortunately, no crashes or injuries have been reported.

According to GM's recall documents, the body control module prevents the tailgate from unlocking while the truck is in motion. However, if the gate unlocks while stationary, it may remain upright until the truck starts moving.

As with the previous recall, GM's solution involves replacing the tailgate switch assemblies with parts designed to resist water intrusion. Dealer notifications for the recall are already underway, and owners of affected vehicles will begin receiving notifications starting January 13.
