BMW Will Produce The Gorgeous Skytop Concept
Basically, this BMW Skytop Concept is an 8 Series with a Targa roof. Like BMW’s other recent one-off models, such as the Z4 shooting brake and the special edition CSL revival, the Skytop was originally shown as nothing more than a concept. Now, however, the model will make it to production, though only 50 will be made.
Frankly, it doesn’t matter what the thing cost but speculation from unconfirmed sources has put the sticker at more than $500K. They’re sold, so who cares?
BMW did, however, confirm some technical details that weren’t present during the car's debut. Namely, this has the same 4.4-liter twin-turbo V8 as the M8, matching the M8 ‘vert’s 3.3-second 0-60 time. BMW doesn’t provide torque specs, but with 625 horsepower from said V8, it’s a little bit more than the M8’s 617 hp.
The roof here is a set of manually detachable targa panels wrapped in synthetic leather, and they’ll tuck nicely into the trunk. Inside, the M8’s cabin is effectively carried over.
For whatever money this thing cost it's surely wealthy buyers, I was expecting a more unique interior. Not that the M8’s interior is necessarily a bad one. There are some physical controls, and this version of BMW’s iDrive infotainment system works just fine. So, why make the Skytop? Apparently, “rapturous” response from interested parties.
