DeTomaso Is Back After Delays And Much Hardship

DeTomaso is back with a new supercar.

The P72 was first revealed in 2019, but it’s taken until now for the small-batch supercar manufacturer to produce one. The first production P72 is now ready, but it still has some steps left before it reaches a customer’s hands.

DeTomaso says that chassis 001 will be used for some final testing procedures before delivery sometime in 2025.

Initially, delivery was set for 2022, but delays and the pandemic forced DeTomaso to push things back. The company was originally going to produce the P72 in America, though plans changed during the pandemic, and the automaker is now partnered with German-based HMG, a supplier with a close relationship with Mercedes-Benz. HMG helped DeTomaso develop the car’s carbon tub after plans to collaborate with Apollo fell through.

DeTomaso says this new carbon structure has a much lower center of gravity along with more room in the cabin, less mass, and increased structural rigidity. The supercharged V8 bolted to the back of this new carbon tub makes some 570 horsepower, but you’ll have to shell out around $1.65 million USD for one.

It’ll cost even more for the DeTomaso P900, which will come equipped with a V12 and 888 horsepower when it debuts.
