Despite ongoing economic uncertainty, potential tariffs, and rising vehicle affordability pressures, American car buyers are sticking with the brands they know. According to the JD Power 2026 U.S. Automotive Brand Loyalty Study, overall automotive brand loyalty rose to 50.2%, up from 49% the previous year.

Automakers largely absorbed additional supply chain and tariff costs rather than passing them directly to consumers, preventing major market disruption and strengthening customer retention. Achieving a 60% loyalty rate is a rare milestone in the auto industry, yet four of this year's top segment leaders crossed or approached that threshold.

Based on transaction data from new-vehicle franchise dealerships, here is the breakdown of the top automotive brands for customer loyalty across five key vehicle segments:

Premium Car Segment

  • 1st Place: Porsche — 61.3% Loyalty Rate
  • 2nd Place: BMW — 49.3% Loyalty Rate

Porsche claims top honors among premium car brands for a fifth consecutive year. Drivers who purchase sports cars and luxury sedans from the Stuttgart brand show unmatched repeat-purchase behavior, while BMW secures a strong second-place finish.

Premium SUV Segment

  • 1st Place: Lexus — 59.2% Loyalty Rate
  • 2nd Place: BMW — 56.4% Loyalty Rate

Lexus leads the premium luxury SUV category for a third straight year, relying on its reputation for high resale value, build quality, and dealership experience to keep owners returning. BMW follows closely behind with strong crossover retention.

Mass Market Car Segment

  • 1st Place: Toyota — 64.8% Loyalty Rate
  • 2nd Place: Honda — 57.5% Loyalty Rate

Toyota secures its fifth consecutive win in the mass-market passenger car category. Models like the Corolla, Camry, and Prius continue to capture repeat buyers, outpacing second-place Honda by more than seven percentage points.

Mass Market SUV Segment

  • 1st Place: Toyota — 63.8% Loyalty Rate
  • 2nd Place: Honda — 63.0% Loyalty Rate

The mass-market SUV category saw one of the tightest battles in the entire study. Toyota edges out Honda by less than one percentage point, with both brands retaining over 63% of their existing SUV owners when trading in for a new vehicle.

Pickup Truck Segment

  1. 1st Place: Ford — 66.2% Loyalty Rate
  2. 2nd Place: Toyota — 62.2% Loyalty Rate

Claiming the highest overall loyalty score in the entire study, Ford takes the truck title for a fifth consecutive year. Driven by the enduring popularity of the F-Series lineup, Ford holds off a strong challenge from Toyota's pickup lineup.

Key Takeaways from the Study

  1. Absorbing Economic Shock: Rather than passing tariff costs and economic volatility along to retail customers, automakers maintained steady pricing and incentive structures, which preserved brand trust.
  2. The Power of 60%: Crossing a 60% brand loyalty rate indicates extreme brand advocacy. Four out of five segment winners—Ford, Toyota (in two categories), and Porsche—exceeded this benchmark.
  3. How Loyalty Is Calculated: Now in its eighth year, the study utilizes transaction data from the Power Information Network (PIN) to measure whether a vehicle owner traded in an existing vehicle to purchase a new model from the same brand at a franchised dealership.
