The Grand Tour Is Back In September—The Clarkson Era Is Over
The Grand Tour is coming back without Jeremy Clarkson, James May, and Richard Hammond.
The Grand Tour will return on September 4 on Prime Video after Clarkson, May, and Hammond signed off for the last time in the fall of 2024. That makes this the first real test of whether the name still carries weight without the trio that effectively made it valuable in the first place.
Prime Video is asking viewers to accept it as the “same show” with, “new knobs.” The new hosts are James Engelsman and Thomas Holland, best known from Throttle House, plus 26-year-old trainspotter Francis Bourgeois.
Holland and Engelsman have worked together for years, and their chemistry is already familiar to plenty of automotive viewers. Bourgeois is the wildcard, and the show clearly needs one. A straight replacement act would be doomed from the first frame.
Little is known about the new season, and the reboot reportedly is not even on Amazon’s official press calendar yet. Amazon hasn't even said much publicly about the return.
Top Gear famously struggled after the trio left and has been off the air for years. Viewers built a relationship with Clarkson, Hammond, and May over decades, and that kind of loyalty does not transfer.
