Jonathan Wheatley, Red Bull's sporting director, will leave the team at the end of the season to become Audi's team principal.

Audi, which is converting Sauber into its factory team for the 2026 season, announced that Wheatley would start by July 2024 at the latest. Red Bull stated that Wheatley will be on "gardening leave" following the 2024 season, without providing further details.

Wheatley has been integral to Red Bull's success, contributing to six constructors' titles and seven drivers' championships over 18 years. Red Bull's team principal Christian Horner noted that the departure allows for internal promotions, with a new team structure to be announced soon.

Former Ferrari team principal Mattia Binotto has also joined Audi, replacing Oliver Hoffmann and Andreas Seidl. Binotto will serve as chief operating and chief technical officer at Sauber Motorsport, collaborating with Wheatley. Wheatley will handle racing performance and operational management, while Binotto will oversee the connection between the Hinwil factory and Audi's engine plant in Germany.

Audi's CEO Gernot Doellner stated that these appointments are critical for Audi's Formula One plans. Wheatley and Binotto's combined experience is expected to aid Audi's entry into the sport.

Red Bull will end its partnership with Honda after the next season, moving to engines developed with Ford support starting in 2026. The team is currently leading both the constructors' and drivers' championships, with Max Verstappen poised to win his fourth title.
