1,000,000 of These Volvos Now Roam the Streets

Volvo Cars marked a milestone in September by delivering its one millionth plug-in hybrid vehicle.

Plug-in hybrids remain an important for Volvo, as in the first half of 2025, they accounted for 23 percent of global sales. Volvo’s PHEV sales have steadily increased, from about 46,000 units in 2019 to more than 177,000 in 2024. Much of that growth has come from demand for the XC60 and XC90 in Europe, the US, and China.

The XC60 has been the best-selling plug-in hybrid in Europe and both the XC60 and XC90 were refreshed last year. Volvo says it has the highest proportion of PHEV sales relative to total sales among established premium brands. The company recently introduced the XC70, its first long-range plug-in hybrid, offering more than 200 kilometers (124 miles) of electric driving range under the CLTC cycle.

“Volvo Cars is committed to a fully electric future, and we will get there in a pace that suits our customers,” says Erik Severinson, chief commercial officer at Volvo Cars. “Our plug-in hybrid cars are a crucial bridge towards that future for those customers who are not yet ready to go fully electric.”

According to Volvo, its data shows many PHEV drivers use their vehicles largely in electric mode, particularly in cities, with about half of total driving time spent without the combustion engine engaged.

“While we invest and grow our presence in the growing premium fully electric segment, we will also continue to update and refresh our hybrids,” says Erik Severinson. “This allows more time for charging infrastructure to be built up, thereby easing the transition to a fully electric world.”
