5 Reasons This Is the Electric Car You Should Buy

Shopping for an electric vehicle, whether one is just diving into the market or upgrading their current electron eater, is a much broader proposition than it was even just a couple of years ago. The amount of choice has increased exponentially, which is why we’ve chosen to highlight the Polestar 3 as a particularly smart selection in an increasingly crowded market.

Performance

Customers of the Polestar 3 have a choice of powertrains for this vehicle, both of which pack impressive numbers and come with all-wheel drive. The long-range dual-motor model makes 489 horsepower and 620 lb-ft of right-now torque, good enough to knock off a 0 – 60 mph run in an estimated 4.8 seconds.

Adding the Performance Pack to this equation juices the equation to a mighty 517 horsepower and 671 lb-ft of torque, the latter of which will punch ya right in the solar plexus every time you stomp on the go pedal. Fun fact: the Polestar 3 can disconnect its rear motor when full power is not required in order to effectively extend real-world range.

Range

Speaking of, much ink has been spilled about the so-called phenomenon of ‘range anxiety’, a catch-all phrase from another era which sought to describe an EV driver’s trepidation of being caught out in a far-flung location without enough juice in the batteries to get home again. Modern technology has largely laid waste to such fears, as exemplified by the Polestar 3 which can travel up to an estimate 315 miles in some trims when conditions are right.

Adding the aforementioned Performance Pack does blunt that figure to 279 miles – but with over 500 horsepower on tap, you’re sure to be grinning for every single one of them. Given a properly robust Level 3 DC 250kW charger, the Polestar 3 could be charged from 10 to 80 percent in about half an hour.

Interior Tech

An enormous tablet-style infotainment touchscreen greets passengers when they clamber aboard the Polestar 3, not unlike most other EVs with which this machine competes. However, the technology baked into that screen is what helps set the Polestar apart from other brands. The system itself is powered by Android Automotive OS – no pairing of a phone required – and features a Polestar-developed interface with bright graphics and attractive easy-to-use icons.

Numerous apps and services from Google are built right into the system, connecting the car to its drivers’ digital ecosystem should they so desire. Maps and routes that one may have created whilst logged in to a Google account on a laptop could appear, for example, to say nothing of the ability to use Google Home integration to monitor the car. Being able to utter “Hey, Google. What’s the charge level of my car?” at the Google speaker inside one’s home before hitting the road is a tremendous blend of existing and readily available technology.

Engineering and Safety

Sharing expertise with Volvo Cars, the Polestar 3 is built on almost a century of fastidious safety development. Structural innovations and advanced driver-assistance systems such as a LiDAR system which scans the environment to create a 3D understanding of the car's surroundings helps place the Polestar 3 at a head table in terms of protective and preventive technology. Inside, a pair of infrared cameras track the driver's eyes while a quartet of motion-sensing radars continually monitor the cabin. Those cams are also capable of detecting signs of fatigue or drowsiness, even through glasses. Even simple touches like engaging the four-way hazard lights when the brakes are hammered in a panic stop help improve visibility to keep occupants safe.

It’s Cool

Sure, styling is subjective – did you see the outfit your brother’s new girlfriend was wearing at the party yesterday? – but it is difficult to argue against the statement that the new Polestar 3 is unlikely to blend in with the crowd. Ours is an era in which many crossovers and SUVs have morphed into shapeless lozenges which, while certainly looking beautiful to the air, often fail to evoke any sort of reaction other than a very strong “meh”.

Designers at Polestar have taken a successful turn with putting aerodynamics and Swedish minimalism in a blender to create a vehicle owners can actually pick out of a packed parking lot. That bluff nose on the Polestar 3 outlines a square jaw, one which somehow scythes through the atmosphere in a range-friendly manner but looks miles away from the typical melted bar of soap. Those hammer-shaped headlamps peer forward into the night stand great against the colors on offer which include entertaining names like Jupiter and Midnight.

Nope. Still too expensive with far too many costly to repair/maintain electronic nannies that I don't want. And 500 HP, who needs this? I live in the northern U.S. and can only imagine the operating system going nuts trying to figure out how to modulate all that power in the snow, dual motor or not. Write me when you have something affordable (like $25k) and reasonably powered (like 250 HP max) and I'll think more seriously about an EV.
