Volkswagen’s seventh-generation Golf is officially the 2015 North American Car of the Year.

Kicking off the Detroit Auto Show, the Golf and GTI beat the new Ford Mustang and the Hyundai Genesis to take the award. The new Golf is underpinned by Volkswagen’s modular MQB platform and is available with a range of powertrains including a 1.8-liter turbocharged four-cylinder gasoline engine for the base Golf and a 2.0-liter turbocharged four-pot for the GTI. Volkswagen also offers a 2.0-liter turbocharged diesel along with the electric eGolf.

By basing the Golf on the MQB platform, it grew larger than the sixth-generation car while saving weight. One of the primary highlights with the Golf is that it offers interior space akin to a mid-size vehicle.
