Rolls-Royce has begun the initial development for its next-generation Phantom.

According to a recent report, Rolls-Royce design chief Giles Taylor and his team have begun sketching the first ideas for the new flagship model which is scheduled to debut in three years. Since the car is still in its initial stages of planning, the platform on which it will be built on is still undecided, but rumor has it that the British automaker is considering using a combination of a carbon fiber bodyshell mounted on a separate aluminum chassis, similar to the BMW i3.

As for the powertrain, expect the V12 to remain part of the Phantom’s lineup, but Rolls-Royce will also likely add a plug-in hybrid variant. The design of the new Phantom’s grille, lights and air intakes are likely to differ from the current model, as Taylor has said that there needs to be a “sense of connection and integration of the [car’s] graphics.”
