Ford’s foray into the world of all-electric SUVs is the Mustang Mach-E. Available in a variety of configurations, the most potent version of the Mach-E is the GT Performance that has 480 hp and well over 600 lb-ft of torque.
The Mach-E is quite a comfortable EV with a decent amount of range. As should be expected with its name, there are plenty of styling cues borrowed from the Mustang pony car.

More than just a name, the newest member of the Mach-E family is a thorough overhaul of the electric SUV. Ford designed, tested, and tuned the Rally on a specially built rallycross course, logging plenty of dirt-slinging miles. The brand even benchmarked the rally-inspired Subaru WRX.

Heck, we liked it so much we crowned it our 2021 Electric Vehicle of the Year. Sure, we’re over two years out from the Mach-E’s reveal and the argument about its name appropriation still rages on. And that’s not going to calm down with this, the 2021 Ford Mustang Mach-E GT.
Yes, Ford has stuck those two important letters onto the rounded rump of its all-electric horse. In many ways, it makes sense, offering V8 levels of thrust and a fun-loving handling balance. The price is steep however, and the GT makes enough concessions to ride quality and range to limit its appeal.
Ford has upped the Mach-E’s power for GT duty. While it draws from the same 98.7-kWh battery pack—91 of which is now usable—horsepower is up to 480, and torque is an even 600 pound-feet. Spec the Performance Edition like this—required in Canada, for now—and the latter figure swells to 634 lb-ft.

In the red corner is the Ford Mustang Mach-E. Much has been said about Ford’s dedicated electric-only pony. No matter which side of the is-it-a-real-Mustang debate you fall on, you can’t deny the Mach-E has shaken up the segment, demanding attention in a segment that will get very crowded, very soon.

So we did the only thing we could do: we pit these two mid-size all-electric crossovers against one another. What resulted surprised us.

I can’t write what the gentlemen said when he spotted the 2021 Ford Mustang Mach-E sitting at a red light.
Our new friend wasn’t ranting about the lack of V8, or the tenuous design links between the Mustang in front of him and the nameplate’s 57 years of history. No, he had stopped mid-step to launch into a profanity-laced exclamation of disbelief. Here in front of him was a blankin’ sick electric blankin’ Mustang SUV.
Dude was excited.
And thus the electric pony passed an important litmus test. Ford has built a solid EV to launch right in the heart of the market—the mid-size crossover space—but its on-paper specs barely matter. To be a true success, the Mach-E needs to win hearts as much as, if not more than, minds. Thankfully, the Mach-E succeeds on both fronts with only minor hangups, making this not just a good first attempt at an EV crossover, but a great crossover full stop.

2021 Ford Mustang Mach-E Review: First Drive
I drove the 2021 Ford Mustang Mach-E for 121 minutes. Apropos of nothing, Star Wars: Episode IV – A New Hope has a runtime that same length.
I’m not going to tell you the Mach-E is the most important new vehicle Ford is launching this year. It isn’t: on a strictly numbers basis, that title belongs to the redesigned F-150, newly available in hybrid format. I don’t think the Mach-E has built up the most hype of the Blue Oval’s new batch, either. The reborn Bronco has avoided much of the controversy of this all-electric, four-door crossover. Blame the name: Ford must’ve known it’d rile up traditionalists by sticking that iconic horse badge on this EV. But long-term, the Mach-E has a much heavier burden than either of its siblings. Just as Star Wars redefined the Hollywood formula in 1977, the Mach-E needs to convince the public a mainstream legacy automaker can play in the EV realm.
Not wanting to belabor the point any longer, I’ll just say it: the Mach-E is good. It is very good, in fact. It isn’t perfect, but for a snow-filled two hours in the beginning of December, the Mach-E showed the way forward for Ford and the automotive industry at large, with clever technology, plenty of practicality, and—true to its name—even a bit of fun from behind the wheel.
