Toyota Removes Prime Name From 2025 PHEV Models
Toyota makes a subtle but significant move for 2025: the "Prime" name is dead.
From now on plug-in hybrids will be known by the straight “PHEV” moniker. The change is aimed at making it easier for consumers to understand Toyota's powertrain options. It’s part of Toyota’s effort to streamline its lineup and align with naming standards already used in Japan and Europe.
2025 Toyota RAV4 PHEV: All The Details
The cars themselves don't change much.
Both the 2025 Prius and RAV4 PHEVs will carry over almost entirely from last year, still rocking the same powertrains and trim levels. The Prius PHEV retains a 220-horsepower setup, delivering 44 miles of electric-only range and a 0-60 sprint in just 6.6 seconds. Meanwhile, the RAV4 PHEV’s beefier 302-horsepower system is good for 42 miles of EV range.
There’s also the quiet disappearance of the blue halo within the Toyota emblem—which once signified hybrids and electric vehicles— has been swapped out for a more understated blue dot alongside the nameplate.
2025 Toyota Prius PHEV: All The Details
Prices have nudged up slightly, with the 2025 RAV4 PHEV starting at $43,865—just $425 more than before. The Prius PHEV hasn’t seen its 2025 price revealed yet, but last year’s started at $32,975.
With a significant PHEV lineup and a reputation for quality, Toyota is 'primed' to keep delivering showroom performance especially as hybrid and electric options continue to grow in popularity. The 2025 Toyota Prius and RAV4 PHEVs will be available in limited quantities by late 2024.
