Rumor Has It Toyota GR GT Will Bring The Aero Top Targa Back
Reports out of Japan suggest Toyota is developing an open-air targa version of its upcoming GR GT V8 flagship sports car.
Based on reports from Japanese automotive media outlets, the open-top version could potentially revive the "Aero Top" name made famous by the Mk IV Supra. It will be no different from the hard-top sports car, simply offering a removable roof panel.
Engineers are allegedly exploring a manually removable targa panel instead of a heavier power-folding roof to preserve the chassis's rigid dynamics and avoid adding excess weight.
Under the sleek bodywork, the GR GT's all-aluminum frame keeps overall curb weight safely below 4,000 pounds. The advanced powertrain pairs a 4.0-liter twin-turbo V8 engine with a rear transaxle hybrid setup featuring an eight-speed automatic transmission. Total system output is projected to exceed 641 horsepower and 627 pound-feet of torque, sending power exclusively to the rear wheels. This thrust is expected to propel the rig well beyond the 200 mph mark.
If the Targa version is greenlit for production alongside the standard coupe and a track-focused aero variant, total global volume across all three models will supposedly be limited to approximately 500 units, mirroring the production run of the legendary Lexus LFA.
Pricing is expected to start around the $200,000 mark.
