Incoming Senator Wants Stellantis Broken Up

Republican Senator-Elect Bernie Moreno is pushing Stellantis to return its American brands to American hands.

The Senator-Elect tells Bloomberg that Jeep, Ram, Dodge, and Chrysler have been subject to “terrible stewardship” under Stellantis. “I’m hoping that John Elkann does the right thing and spins off Chrysler Corporation and puts its back in American ownership,” Moreno says.

Stellantis, meanwhile, sounds like it has no intention of parting with its American portfolio of automakers. It told Bloomberg that brands like Jeep and Ram are “at the heart of Stellantis’ strategy,” and that “together with our partners and stakeholders, we will continue building Stellantis as the automotive company of the future.” However, Stellantis’ revenue has plummeted from its 2023 highs, and the company is in turmoil after the exit of CEO Carlos Tavares.

The incoming Senator alleges Stellantis wants to produce vehicles in cheaper countries, and says that Tavares “fired all the Americans.” Moreno’s rhetoric on the American auto industry and outsourcing ties in closely with incoming President Trump’s views on the industry, though the two have apparently not spoken to discuss Senator-Elect Moreno’s views on Stellantis.
