With just weeks to go before the 2025 24 Hours of Le Mans, Porsche has released another teaser for its upcoming road-legal prototype, now officially named the 963 RSP.

Key Points

  • Porsche has officially named its new one-off, road-oriented Le Mans prototype the 963 RSP, a car heavily based on the 963 LMDh endurance racer and teased ahead of the 2025 24 Hours of Le Mans.
  • The teaser video showcases a hand-built process involving carbon-fiber bodywork, suede-like trim, and an enamel badge, suggesting a high level of craftsmanship and potential road use.
  • If road-legal, the 963 RSP would be Porsche’s first street-ready Le Mans prototype since the 911 GT1, despite the technical and regulatory hurdles of adapting a modern hybrid race car for public roads.

As you would imagine, the 963 RSP will be a highly exclusive, road-oriented version of the 963 LMDh race car currently competing in both IMSA and the WEC.

The teaser video is an ASMR look at the finer details of the car's build process. In it, Porsche shows carbon-fiber bodywork prep, upholstery work, paint mixing, and even finishing the crest with enamel. It ends with a close-up of a 963 RSP badge integrated into the rear lighting—an obvious hint that the road car will retain the LMDh's rear light bar.

Porsche says the 963 RSP is a “one-of-one vehicle crafted with precision, purpose and detail at every touchpoint,” which either means they're only going to build one, or that every single one they do build—in limited quantities of course— will be completely unique.

No technical specifications have been disclosed, but the race car uses a 4.6-liter twin-turbo V8 engine derived from the Porsche 918 Spyder's which is hooked to a 7-speed sequential transmission and spec hybrid system. It's all wrapped up neat and tidy in a Multimatic-built LMP2 chassis. The first teaser image shows the 963's high wing and dorsal fin, so it may actually retain more of the race car's DNA than anyone really thinks.

Total system output is more than 650 horsepower. It's unclear if the road car will use the same spec MGU, but it's probably a fair bet the pneumatically actuated gearbox won't be the same. Porsche hasn’t even confirmed if the car will be truly road-legal or merely styled for the street.

If it is indeed designed for the street, the 963 RSP would be one of the most obscene builds Porsche has undertaken in decades. It will be the first time since the GT1 that Porsche has built a road-ready version of its top-shelf endurance car.

Expect further details in the run-up to Le Mans in just a few weeks time.
