Mercedes-AMG has introduced its first full-size SUV developed entirely in-house from the ground up: the 2028 Mercedes-AMG GT SUV. Built in Affalterbach and manufactured at the historic Sindelfingen plant in Germany, the new high-performance electric SUV is the second vehicle to utilize the brand’s dedicated AMG.EA high-performance architecture.

Scheduled to arrive at U.S. dealerships in the summer of 2027, the lineup will feature three model tiers at launch: the entry-level AMG GT 53 SUV, the mid-tier AMG GT 55 SUV, and the flagship AMG GT 63 SUV.

Tri-Motor Powertrain and 1,153 Horsepower

The top-spec AMG GT 63 SUV uses a three-motor layout featuring axial flux electric motor technology. The rear axle houses two axial flux motors within a single unit, each utilizing a compact planetary gearbox and liquid-cooled silicon carbide inverters. A single axial flux motor sits on the front axle to act as a booster unit, automatically decoupling via a Disconnect Unit (DCU) during light loads to maximize range.

In the flagship AMG GT 63 SUV, the tri-motor setup generates a peak output of 1,153 horsepower and a sustained output of up to 711 horsepower. Mercedes-AMG quotes a 0-to-60 mph sprint time of 2.4 seconds, a 0-to-124 mph time of 6.8 seconds, and an electronically limited top speed of 168 mph. The AMG GT 55 SUV produces up to 805 horsepower using a similar tri-motor configuration.

The base AMG GT 53 SUV adopts a dual-motor setup using permanently excited synchronous electric motors producing a combined 536 horsepower. The rear axle of the GT 53 incorporates a two-speed transmission to optimize off-the-line launch acceleration and high-speed highway efficiency.

800-Volt Battery Tech and 710-kW Fast Charging

Underneath the cabin, the AMG GT SUV houses an 800-volt battery featuring directly cooled cylindrical cells. An electrically non-conductive oil flows around each individual cell to maintain consistent operating temperatures under sustained heavy loads.

The battery is offered in two capacities:

  1. 106-kWh Battery (18 Modules): Standard on the AMG GT 53 SUV, supporting DC fast charging speeds up to 600 kW. It can replenish up to 380 km (236 miles) of WLTP range in 10 minutes.
  2. 128-kWh Battery (22 Modules): Standard on the AMG GT 55 and GT 63 SUV, supporting DC fast charging capacities up to 710 kW. It can add up to 450 km (280 miles) of WLTP range in 10 minutes, or charge from 10 to 80 percent state-of-charge in 12 minutes.

The charging system natively supports 800-volt DC fast chargers while automatically converting to 400-volt operation when plugged into legacy architecture. It is designed to accommodate major global charging standards, including NACS in North America.

Active Suspension and Driver-Centric Cockpit

Riding on a multi-link front and rear suspension made with forged aluminum links, the AMG GT SUV debuts the newly developed AMG ACTIVE RIDE CONTROL+ suspension. The system replaces traditional mechanical roll bars with active hydraulic elements that regulate pitch and roll during hard cornering, acceleration, and heavy braking. Standard active rear-axle steering turns the rear wheels up to 6 degrees opposite the front wheels at low speeds to tighten the turning radius, or parallel up to 1 degree at speeds above 50 mph to enhance stability.

Inside, the driver-centric dashboard anchors a 14-inch center touchscreen angled toward the driver alongside a 10.2-inch digital instrument cluster, with an optional 14-inch screen available for the front passenger. The center console includes the AMG RACE ENGINEER control unit with rotary dials to manually fine-tune motor response, torque-vectoring agility, and nine-stage traction control.

To satisfy traditional AMG buyers, the car includes an "AMGFORCE Sport+" drive mode that uses internal seat vibrators, simulated gear shifts, and real-time audio profiles meticulously sampled from 16 microphones on a V8-powered AMG GT R to recreate internal combustion engine feedback.

Final U.S. market pricing, EPA range figures, and detailed curb weights will be released closer to the vehicle's summer 2027 market launch.
