Hyundai and Kia Sedans Recalled For Leaky Fuel Tanks
Hyundai Motor Group is preparing to recall the Hyundai Sonata and the Kia K5 after identifying a problem that could allow the subling sedan's fuel tanks to swell and melt against nearby exhaust components.
The campaign covers 85,043 Hyundai Sonata sedans from 2020-2023 and 250,547 Kia K5 models from 2021–2024, both are equipped with the group's 1.6-liter turbocharged four-cylinder engine.
According to documents submitted to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA), the issue stems from a deteriorating purge-system check valve. When functioning normally, the valve regulates airflow from the charcoal canister to the engine.
Hyundai says the valve can break down over time, allowing pressurized air from the intake manifold to flow backward into the fuel tank. The tank can then expand enough to make contact with hot exhaust pipes. If the car is driven long enough in that condition, the tank could partially melt and begin to leak.
Kia will replace the check valve on all affected vehicles and inspect each fuel tank for damage, replacing it if needed. All repairs will be performed at no cost to owners.
