137,256 Kia Crossovers Could Need Engine Replacements

Kia is recalling 137,256 crossovers from the 2021 to 2023 model years due to a potential defect that could require a full engine replacement.
Key Points
- Kia recalls Seltos and Soul models from 2021 to 2023 due to defective piston rings
- Affected vehicles may experience excessive oil consumption, abnormal engine noise, and in severe cases, fire
- Kia will inspect affected vehicles, replace damaged engines, install new noise-sensing software, and reimburse owners for previous related repairs
The recall affects 53,635 Seltos and 83,621 Soul models equipped with the naturally aspirated 2.0-liter engine. The turbocharged 1.6-liter engine is not impacted by te defect.
According to documents filed with the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA), the issue stems from defective piston oil rings, which may cause excessive oil consumption and lead to engine damage or seizure. In some cases, the issue could even result in an engine bay fire.
Kia states that warning signs include abnormal engine noise, increased oil consumption, and the illumination of the oil pressure light on the dashboard. Affected owners will be instructed to bring their vehicles to a Kia dealership for inspection. If cylinder wall damage is detected, Kia will replace the engine.
As a preventive measure, all recalled vehicles will receive piston-ring noise-sensing software. Kia has also confirmed that owners who have already paid for repairs related to this issue will be eligible for reimbursement. Kia dealerships have been informed of the recall, and owner notifications are set to begin on April 4.
