HRC Just Showed The Prelude Everyone Wants Honda To Build

Honda just showed a radical Prelude prototype in Japan, one that all enthusiasts wish they could buy off the showroom floor.

The GT500 prototype previews the weapon Honda will use to fight Toyota and Nissan in Japan's top-level Super GT series starting next year. The new Prelude race car comes just 2 seasons after Honda debuted the Civic Type-R GT500 car.


The GT500 car's debut comes shortly after Honda showed the production Prelude, which is powered by a relatively tame 200-hp hybrid powertrain and CVT gearbox. The road car has left some internet enthusiasts wanting more—and yet Japanese shoppers have already purchased every single one of the early allocation Preludes.

The Prelude GT race car will be built by Honda Racing Corporation (HRC) and will replace the Civic Type R GT500, which has been killed by the success of Toyota’s GR Supra and Nissan’s Z. The Civic is at risk of delivering Honda's first winless season in Super GT since 2016.


Honda hasn’t shared drivetrain specs, but the Prelude GT won't have much in common with the road car outside of badges. For one, the Prelude GT is rear-wheel-drive with a mid-front mounted engine bolted longitudinally to a spec monocoque, whereas the road-going Prelude is a front-wheel-drive hybrid. However, the Prelude GT should likely use an engine we've already seen from HRC.


The outgoing Civic Type-R GT500 car uses Honda's HR-420E 2.0L inline-4 turbo with direct injection, dual overhead camshafts, and four valves per cylinder. It spins at 9,500 rpm and is blown by a single Garrett turbo and is run by a Bosch Motronic engine management system. It's shares many similarities with the engine Honda uses in Super Formula.


It's also possible Honda could use its new HRC-K20C engine, which shares some commonalities with the road-going Civic Type-R's engine. The 2.0L engine satisfies the GT500 engine requirements, and it looks like Honda is already planning to replace the SF engine with the Spec D version of the K20C.

Honda's images of the Prelude show extensive use of exposed carbon fiber, bulging fenders, and absurdly aggressive aero, including a front splitter that could plow snow, and a massive swan-neck rear wing. Bridgestone slicks wrap Rays wheels, while AP Racing brakes provide the stopping power.


HRC says the prototype’s first shakedown test is set for this week, the first of many as the automaker begins to publicly push the car's development ahead of the 2026 championship, which gets underway next April at Okayama International Circuit.


Super GT’s GT500 class has long been a three-way battle between Japan’s biggest performance brands from Toyota, Honda, and Nissan. Toyota’s GR Supra claimed the 2024 title and looks likely to repeat in 2025, with Supras sitting in the top five positions in the championship.
