Honda Extends Warranty For Faulty Head Gaskets For Up to 10 Years

Honda and its luxury division, Acura, are extending cylinder head gasket warranty coverage to 10 years or 150,000 miles for several of their most popular models.

The extended coverage applies to select gas-only and hybrid models built between 2016 and 2026 model years. Honda announced the coverage via a Technical Service Bulletin (TSB) distributed to dealer service departments rather than issuing a safety recall. Under a TSB, technicians perform specified repairs at no cost to vehicle owners if the vehicle exhibits symptoms of the documented defect.

Standard Honda and Acura new-vehicle powertrain warranties cover vehicles for 5 years or 60,000 miles (6 years or 70,000 miles for Acura). The extension doubles the factory coverage window for the head gasket and is fully transferable to subsequent owners.

Honda and Acura Head Gasket Symptoms and Repair Details

Head gasket degradation can allow engine coolant to leak into the combustion chambers. Common indicators of a failing head gasket include:

• Unexpected coolant loss without external leaks
• Engine overheating
• Cylinder misfires, particularly upon cold starts
• An illuminated check engine light accompanied by diagnostic trouble codes (DTCs P0300 through P0304)

Dealership service technicians will inspect affected engines and replace faulty head gaskets at no charge. If coolant leaks have caused secondary damage—such as a warped cylinder head or engine block damage—dealers are authorized to replace the cylinder head or complete short block as necessary.

Honda's Grace Period for Older Models

Formal owner notification letters are expected to go out in early October.

For older vehicles where the 10-year limit from the original purchase date has already lapsed (such as early 2016 model-year vehicles), Honda is adding a six-month grace period starting from the date owner notification letters are issued. Owners of those older models will have until May 31, 2027, to have qualifying head gasket repairs performed under warranty.
