3 Most Outrageous Facts About the 2024 GMC Hummer EV SUV
The 2024 GMC Hummer EV SUV is an engineering tour de force, answering a lot of questions that were probably never asked in the first place.
Ridiculously capable off-road, the electric SUV is full of specs and figures that are hard to comprehend. We could probably write a 5,000-word thesis on this topic, but we’ll just focus on just three key figures. We present them below in no particular order.
2024 GMC Hummer EV SUV Omega Edition Review: All The Details
Battery Size
Getting a concrete figure of just how big the battery is on the Hummer EV SUV is hard to come by. It’s north of 200 kWh, probably in the 212 kWh neighborhood of usable space. That’s massive when considering the vast majority of EVs have batteries under well under 100 kWh.
GMC achieves this behemoth storage unit by essentially stacking two batteries on top of each other. With so much battery space to charge, it’s a good thing that the 2024 Hummer EV SUV can charge at speeds up to 300 kW.
Weight
With such a massive battery, it’s no surprise the SUV is excessively heavy. But at an estimated 9,000 pounds (4,500 kilograms), the Hummer encroaches into new territory for a vehicle its size. GMC has done a good job to hide all that weight when driving the vehicle, but the ground it rolls over would beg to differ.
Acceleration
Even with 830 horsepower and well over 1,000 pound-feet of torque, we’re amazed at how quickly the 2024 GMC Hummer EV SUV can accelerate. Remember, it’s got about 9,000 lbs to haul around. Officially, GMC quotes the 0-60 mph time at 3.5 seconds which is downright nutty. This is achieved by using a launch control system called Watts to Freedom.
But we think it could be even faster. The mud terrain tires are not well suited for on-road traction, and we wonder what would happen with a set of sticky performance tires installed. Regardless, the way the Hummer EV SUV’s rear suspension squats down under hard acceleration only emphasizes the physics-defying haste.
