Genesis GT3 Concept Debuts at Le Mans—Production GT Halo Car Likely

Just months after unveiling the Magma GT Concept, the Korean luxury brand has pulled the wraps off a competition-spec machine that all but guarantees the program is getting the green light.


The Magma GT3 Concept made its debut at the 24 Hours of Le Mans, where Genesis is preparing for its first appearance in endurance racing's premier Hypercar category. While still officially labeled a concept, the Magma GT3 appears to look like a finished race car—right down to the LMGT3-spec Goodyear rubber.


Developed in partnership with Hyundai Motorsport, the GT3 Concept offers a look at how Genesis wants to expand beyond the FIA World Endurance Championship's top class, and into the far more profitable realm of customer racing.

According to Hyundai Motorsport President and Team Principal Cyril Abiteboul, rather than serving solely as a factory-backed effort, the Magma GT3 has been penned as a potential customer race car that could be sold to teams and private drivers competing in GT racing series across the globe.


The GT3 Concept retains the dramatic proportions of the original Magma GT while adding the aerodynamic hardware expected of an LMGT3 race car. The front fascia incorporates Genesis' signature lighting elements, while gaining a wider track across the square, a bigger front splitter, a massive rear diffuser, widened bodywork, and a towering rear wing you could tend bar behind. The centerlock wheel hubs even have the right/left specific lock nuts colored blue and red, a hallmark of proper race cars.


Interestingly, Genesis says the car was conceived from a motorsport-first perspective. Abiteboul explained that the design team began with GT3 regulations and performance requirements before shaping the vehicle around them, reversing the traditional process of adapting a road car into a race car. Ford did that with the GT a few years ago, and look how well that worked out for them.

Of course, if Genesis ultimately pursues GT3 homologation, a production version will need to exist and sell in a certain volume to satisfy the regulations used in IMSA and the FIA World Endurance Championship. It would be silly if they didn't proceed—the work is already done, after all; the paperwork just needs filing.


We still have no idea what engine might power either the Magma GT or the GT3 car, nor any semblance of technical or performance specifications. The teaser video the company put out makes it sound like a high-revving V8, which would fit in nicely with most of the class.


The brand did show an updated Magma GT, though, including a new paint job and a fully finished interior. There have also been some small exterior changes to the rear lights, and the addition of a fuel door on both the right and left-hand side, a nod to its endurance race car roots.

The GT Concept also seems to be slightly longer than the original concept model shown—probably because it has an actual engine installed in the back this time—it looks much better and closer to a finished product now.


"The Magma GT Concept and Magma GT3 Concept represent two distinct yet connected expressions of Genesis performance," said Genesis Chief Creative Officer Luc Donckerwolke. "The Magma GT Concept embodies our vision of luxury and athleticism on the road, while the Magma GT3 Concept translates that philosophy into the race environment, where every element is driven by performance, efficiency, and purpose."
