NHTSA Upgrades Probe Into Ford 1.0L EcoBoost Engine Failures

The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) has officially escalated its investigation into widespread timing belt failures affecting Ford’s 1.0-liter EcoBoost engine. Upgrading the inquiry from a preliminary evaluation to a formal Engineering Analysis, regulators warn that degrading wet timing belts can quietly contaminate engine oil systems, leading to sudden, total engine seizure.


The expanded probe now encompasses an estimated 135,551 vehicles across multiple nameplates:


  • 2014–2017 Ford Fiesta
  • 2015–2018 Ford Focus (equipped with manual or automatic transmissions)
  • 2018–2021 Ford EcoSport

How the 1.0L EcoBoost "Wet Belt" Design Causes Failure

The core issue stems from Ford’s use of an internal "wet timing belt" design, where the belt operates submerged in engine oil. Over time, normal engine operation causes the belt material to gradually shed fragments directly into the crankcase.


As rubber debris accumulates, it clogs the oil pump pickup screen, starving vital engine components of lubrication. Continued driving without adequate oil flow leads to severe mechanical damage, often culminating in an immediate loss of motive power.


Failures Occur Below Factory Service Intervals

A major driver behind NHTSA’s escalation is the timing of these failures relative to Ford’s maintenance guidance:

  1. Average Failure Mileage: Data indicates the average reported breakdown happens at approximately 70,000 miles.
  2. Premature Breakdown: A massive 98 percent of documented failures occurred well before Ford’s original recommended 150,000-mile timing belt replacement window.
  3. Lack of Warning: Many drivers reported receiving no advance indication before their engine died, while others experienced a low oil pressure warning light just seconds before total failure.
  4. Maintenance History: Agency teardowns and surveys showed that failures frequently occurred on well-maintained engines with documented, routine oil changes.

Current Status and Next Steps

In response to rising owner complaints, Ford shortened its global timing belt service interval to 100,000 miles or six years and initiated a customer satisfaction program to reimburse eligible out-of-pocket repair costs.


However, because a customer program is not a mandatory recall, NHTSA maintains that the defect presents an unreasonable safety risk on public roads. Federal investigators will continue component and vehicle testing through the Engineering Analysis stage to determine if a full safety recall will be required.
