Ford Recalls Millions of Pickups and SUVs For Towing Problems

Ford is recalling millions of 2021–2026 model year trucks and SUVs over a trailer lighting and braking issue that could result in a loss of critical signals while towing.

The recall covers aprximately 4.4 million trucks and SUVS, including 2.3 million F-150s built between 2021 and 2026, and an additional 1.1 million F-250 Super Duty models from 2022–2026. There are 400,000 Lincoln Navigator and Ford Expedition SUVs combined, 400,000 Maverick compact pickups, 130,000 2024–2026 Ranger midsize trucks, and 15,000 E-Transit vans.

According to documents filed with the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, the integrated trailer module (ITRM) in affected vehicles may lose communication with the vehicle when a trailer is connected.

If that communication is interrupted, the trailer could lose brake lights, turn signals, or in some cases, braking function. That condition means the vehicles do not meet the requirements of Federal Motor Vehicle Safety Standard No. 108, which governs lamps, reflective devices, and associated equipment.

The integrated trailer module manages electrical signals between the tow vehicle and the trailer, ensuring that lighting and, where equipped, trailer brake commands operate in sync with the driver’s inputs. A failure in that system can create a situation in which following drivers are not alerted to braking or turning maneuvers, increasing the risk of a crash.

Ford’s remedy involves updating the integrated trailer module software. The fix will be performed at dealerships at no cost to owners, and in many cases can also be delivered through an over-the-air update. Owner notification letters are scheduled to be mailed beginning March 17, 2026.

Owners can contact Ford customer service at 1-866-436-7332 and reference recall number 26C10. Affected vehicle identification numbers will be searchable on NHTSA’s website starting March 17, 2026.
