Ford Could Revive Fiesta As An EV

Ford might be considering reviving the Fiesta, but not in the way most might expect.

Key Points

  • Ford may revive the Fiesta as an EV using Volkswagen’s MEB Entry platform, shared with the upcoming VW ID.2all Concept.
  • No official confirmation yet from Ford, but the brand continues to explore affordable EV options amid a growing partnership with VW.
  • A separate low-cost EV is in development at Ford, targeting a ~$25,000 price point with lithium-iron-phosphate batteries to compete with emerging rivals like BYD.

Less than two years after inexplicably killing the long-running subcompact, the automaker is now exploring ways to bring it back as a small electric vehicle, potentially built on Volkswagen’s MEB Entry platform. This is the same architecture that will underpin Volkswagen’s incoming ID.1 and ID.2.

The Ford-VW collaboration has already birthed electric crossovers for Europeans like the Explorer EV and the Capri, both of which share architecture with VW’s ID.4 and ID.5.

According to Auto Express, Volkswagen’s head of sales and marketing, Martin Sander—who previously held a senior role at Ford in Europe—said that the partnership has been “very successful,” and would welcome further shared projects.

However, platform sharing for an entry-level hatchback presents challenges. Any future Fiesta EV would compete directly with Volkswagen and its greater group’s other small electric vehicles, such as the Cupra Raval and Skoda Epiq. For Ford to proceed, a commercial arrangement would need to address overlapping markets and the potential for internal competition.

Separately, Ford is developing an in-house, low-cost electric vehicle designed to compete with emerging rivals such as BYD. The project, reportedly led by an internal skunkworks team, may utilize a lithium-iron-phosphate (LFP) battery pack to reduce costs and extend durability.

As long as Ford doesn't revive it as another SUV all Ok. If it's going to be another SUV or crossover then leave the mame in peace. No more atrocities like the Mach-e or the Capri are needed.

A 4,000lb Fiesta with Ford "quality" and VW "engineering". Yeah, no thanks.
