Update: General Motors' voluntary recall has been upgraded to a full NHTSA campaign. You can find the associated documents from the safety regulator here.

General Motors just recalled every 2023–2026 Chevrolet Corvette Z06 and 2025–2026 Corvette ZR1 in North America, because of a fuel spillage issue when refueling that could cause the car to catch on fire.

Key Points

  • GM has recalled all 2023–2026 Corvette Z06 and 2025–2026 Corvette ZR1 models over a fuel spillage issue during refueling that could increase the risk of fire.
  • A stop-sale was also issued on unsold 2025 and 2026 models until repairs are made.
  • Dealers will install a protective insert or shield to redirect spilled fuel, with all fixes performed free of charge for owners.

“General Motors has decided that a defect which relates to motor vehicle safety may exist in certain 2023 – 2026 model year Chevrolet Corvette vehicles equipped with a left-side radiator/fan combination. In these vehicles, excess fuel spilled into the vehicle fuel-filler pocket during refueling may leak onto an ignition source.”

Chevrolet says the recall is voluntary and linked to rare cases where excess gasoline spills into the Corvette’s fuel-filler pocket. The company says that faulty or damaged pumps at gas stations appear to be contributing, as does overfilling by owners after the pump's automatic shutoff clicks. Regardless of the cause, the concern is that spilled fuel could catch on fire.

GM also issued a stop-sale order on all unsold 2025 and 2026 models sitting on dealer lots until the proper repairs are made.

According to GM's recall website, dealers will install a protective insert or shield to divert any spilled gasoline away from sensitive components. The theory going around is that cooling fans on the Corvette’s left side can continue running after the engine is off, which could blow fuel or vapors towards possible ignition sources.

So far, the issue only affects Z06 and ZR1 models, which use the unique left-side radiator and fan setup. The upcoming ZR1X shares the same layout, but it has not yet entered production and isn't included in the recall. Owners will be contacted directly, and all repairs will be performed at no charge through authorized dealerships.

Well, they could have designed it right in the first place, but GM saved at least 28 cents by not keeping safety and quality in mind. Just make that fast buck is the American motto.
