GM And Hyundai Get Together

This week, Hyundai and General Motors signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU), exploring developing “passenger and commercial vehicles, internal combustion engines and clean-energy, electric and hydrogen technologies.” The two are also looking at combining sourcing for battery materials, steel, and more.

The two companies say they’ll set to work “immediately.” However, what isn't quite clear yet is beyond the broad ideas disclosed in the press release, GM and Hyundai haven't offered any specifics. However, the two have strong electric platforms already.

GM’s chief pursuit within the partnership may be new electrified models. Last year, GM and Honda parted ways after agreeing to work together on EVs. Hyundai has some of the best EVs on the market, and its pairing with GM’s Ultium arm could produce some viable products. Does this signal GM's intent to abandon Ultium altogether and explore a different architecture?

When that could be, or even if that is what GM and Hyundai want, remains to be seen.
