he Most Reliable Compact SUVs You Can Buy in 2026
What are the most reliable small SUVs on the market today? It’s a question more buyers are asking as prices climb and long-term ownership matters more than ever.
To answer it, we’ve ranked today’s mainstream compact SUVs—from worst to best—based on predicted reliability. The list is broken into tiers, from F (avoid at all costs) to S (best-in-class dependability).
F Tier: Avoid
Jeep Cherokee
The newly reintroduced 2026 Jeep Cherokee lands squarely at the bottom. Jeep’s poor reliability record continues to be a major concern, with consistently low rankings in industry surveys and frequent recalls.
The bigger issue is what’s under the hood. The Cherokee uses an all-new, unproven hybrid powertrain paired with a small, turbocharged 1.6-liter engine that’s arguably undersized for a vehicle in this class. Combine questionable engineering with a weak track record, and it’s a risky buy right now.
D Tier: Below Average
Ford Bronco Sport
The Bronco Sport’s rugged styling doesn’t translate to long-term durability. Its EcoBoost engines—particularly the 1.5-liter three-cylinder—have a history of issues, including coolant leaks, water pump failures, and head gasket problems. Transmission reliability is also a concern.
Nissan Rogue
The Rogue continues to struggle with a problematic powertrain. Its 1.5-liter turbocharged three-cylinder engine has faced multiple recalls related to potential engine failure, while the CVT transmission remains a known weak point. It’s not a combination that inspires confidence for long-term ownership.
C Tier: Average at Best
Volkswagen Tiguan
Volkswagen’s compact SUV is held back by ongoing engine concerns. Reports of turbocharger failures—sometimes occurring very early in ownership—have raised red flags. Add in generally high repair costs and complexity, and the Tiguan becomes a riskier proposition.
Chevrolet Equinox & GMC Terrain
These mechanically identical SUVs continue GM’s trend of middling reliability in this segment. Recent models have scored poorly in reliability studies, with issues ranging from electrical faults to transmission problems. The small turbocharged engines also raise durability concerns over time.
B Tier: Decent, But Not Perfect
Mitsubishi Outlander
The Outlander is a mixed bag. The plug-in hybrid version stands out as the better choice, thanks to its relatively simple and robust setup. The gas model, however, relies on a CVT similar to Nissan’s, which introduces some long-term uncertainty.
Hyundai Tucson & Kia Sportage
Hyundai and Kia have improved significantly in recent years. Their latest 2.5-liter engines appear to have resolved many of the issues that plagued earlier designs. Hybrid models are also proving solid so far. Still, the brand’s past reliability issues keep these SUVs from ranking higher—at least for now.
A Tier: Strong Choices
Honda CR-V Hybrid
The CR-V Hybrid is one of the safest bets in the segment. Its naturally aspirated engine paired with a simple, well-proven hybrid system eliminates many traditional failure points, including a conventional transmission. Honda’s decades of hybrid experience show here.
Subaru Forester
Subaru’s Forester continues to deliver dependable performance with a well-established 2.5-liter boxer engine. While it uses a CVT, Subaru’s version has improved significantly in recent years. Add in excellent all-wheel drive capability, and it’s a well-rounded, reliable option.
S Tier: Best of the Best
Mazda CX-5
If you want a traditional gas-powered SUV with maximum reliability, the CX-5 is hard to beat. Its naturally aspirated 2.5-liter engine and conventional six-speed automatic transmission are both proven, durable, and refreshingly simple. This is one of the most dependable powertrains you can buy today.
Toyota RAV4 Hybrid
For those considering a hybrid, the RAV4 Hybrid sits at the top. Toyota’s fifth-generation hybrid system has been refined over more than two decades and is widely regarded as bulletproof. With a simple engine, electric motors, and a planetary gear transmission, it’s capable of running well beyond 300,000 km with minimal issues.
Final Thoughts
Reliability in the compact SUV segment varies more than ever. While some models are pushing new technology and downsized turbo engines, others stick with proven formulas that prioritize durability.
If long-term ownership and peace of mind are your priorities, sticking with established powertrains from brands like Toyota, Mazda, Honda, and Subaru remains the safest move in 2026.
