Hyundai Palisade Investigated For Unlatching Seatbelts

The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) has opened an investigation into the Hyundai Palisade to look into reports of unlatching seatbelts. The investigation, opened on August 7th, is based on 37 complaints filed by customers with the NHTSA. The agency's report states that “Without warning, the seat belt may inadvertently unlatch, increasing the risk of injury due to full loss of seat belt protection.” Thankfully, the agency is not aware of any crashes, fires, or injuries as a result of the issue, which covers 2020-2023 Palisade SUVs. All told, 332,288 cars are estimated to be affected.

It’s important to note that this is not yet a recall. The NHTSA will investigate the claims received before deciding what must be done. The agency’s own report calls this a “preliminary evaluation” that will “determine the scope and severity of the alleged problem and to assess the potential safety-related consequences.” Critically, Hyundai will be asked to present its perspective on the issue, and a recall could be voluntarily issued by the brand. Conversely, the NHTSA may also send a request for a recall to Hyundai. Should either of these things happen a recall with more specific year, make, and model details will be announced by the NHTSA.
