Mercedes-Benz Lights Up All Things with New Styling Direction
Light up badges are passe, Mercedes-Benz is looking to light up the entire grille as the brand previews the manufacturer’s new styling direction. It is what Mercedes refers to as an elevation of the Sensual Purity design language.
The only preview image we are provided shows the first product vehicle this new styling will appear on, the Mercedes‑Benz GLC with EQ Technology. The main highlight the brand wants to show case here is the new-look grille, illuminated by 942 backlit square dots.
The new face continues Mercedes-Benz’ long tradition of chrome grilles, as the outline remains chrome, while inside there is smoked glass and those aforementioned lighting elements. Those backlit dots can be animated, and we hope there is a way to add custom animations down the road. Think of all the retro-cool animations one could make with all those oversized pixels. Oh, and it’s not just the dots that are illuminated, the three-star badge as well as the grille surround are both backlit too. We’re curious how this set-up will look rolling down the road at night.
The timing of this new styling direction debuting on the all-electric GLC is not a coincidence. BMW is ready to launch an all-new styling direction on the brand’s similar sized all-electric SUV, the iX3.
Aside from the new look, the new GLC will also include the MB.OS supercomputer and an interior with the MBUX HYPERSCREEN. Look for the new GLC to officially debut in the near future.
