Hyundai's Three-Row Electric SUV Will Debut Later This Year

Hyundai has confirmed that its first three-row electric SUV will come to the US and is set to make an appearance later this year. Though there’s no word on when this year, we do know that the new SUV will launch with an update to Hyundai’s Ioniq 5 for the 2025 model year. Several other models will join the brand’s expanding electric lineup next year, and we believe the SUV will keep the “Ioniq” name, possibly debuting as the Ioniq 9.

Technical details are scarce for the moment. We do know that the Ioniq 9, if it is to be called that, will ride on Kiand Hyundai’s shared E-GMP platform. It should offer similar stats to the Kia EV9, its closest analog with more than 300 miles of range, DC fast charging capability, and Hyundai’s latest suite of tech features and driver aids.

As for the refreshed Ioniq 5, that should largely mirror the model’s Korean market updates, which came earlier this year. In short, a bigger battery, updated front and rear fascias, and (finally) a rear wiper was added. The larger battery is far and away the biggest change, bumping capacity to 84 kWh from 77.4 kWh, in addition to slightly quicker charge rates. Korean estimates put range at some 301 miles, but North American range testing cycles could see this figure shift some.
