Donald Trump Looks To Cut Federal EV Policy

During his nomination speech at the Republican National Convention, former President Donald Trump said that his changes to EM or elimination of EM Federal electric vehicle policies enacted by President Biden will be “saving the U.S. auto industry from complete obliteration, which is happening right now, and saving U.S. customers thousands and thousands of dollars per car.”

It’s worth clearing up some of the former President’s terminology. Much of Trump’s speech references an “EV Mandate,” which refers to a new EPA regulation governing tailpipe emissions EM one which will push automakers to sell more efficient hybrid and electric cars over time. Under the legislation, automakers would be given a choice in how they meet emissions targets. Trump’s plan instead shifts financial resources for federal EV spending to infrastructure like existing roads, bridges, and dams. The former President also did not provide specifics on how this money would be used to improve infrastructure.

Trump also used his time on stage at the RNC to attack the United Auto Workers Union (UAW), and its president, Shawn Fain. Trump claims that the UAW has allowed China to build auto plants in Mexico, which will undercut American-built autos. Trump has previously said he would impose 100%-200% tariffs on Chinese EVs built in Mexico. "The United Auto Workers ought to be ashamed for allowing this to happen, and the leader of the United Auto Workers should be fired immediately. And every single auto worker, union and non-union, should be voting for Donald Trump," the former President said. The UAW argues that Trump will “pad the pockets of the ludicrously wealthy auto executives."

"... the leader of the United Auto Workers should be fired immediately..."

Many years ago, my father encouraged me to join the Teamsters in order to avail myself of the higher wages as I saved for college. For three summers I earned enough in that job to graduate college with both a degree and no debt. I will forever be indebted to America's union movement for my success in life and urge every member of every union to vote for Kamala Harris and not the liar, cheat, and felon Donald Trump. Does any union member think that Mr. Trump, who routinely stiffed craftsmen working on his many money-making schemes, will actually keep any of these promises? Talk with your union brothers and think hard about your choice before placing your ballot this Fall.
