General Motors and Tesla have opened access to over 17,800 Superchargers in the U.S. and Canada for Chevy, GMC, and Cadillac EV owners.

This move follows similar actions for Ford and Rivian EVs, expanding the reach of one of the most reliable fast-charging networks. To use the Superchargers, GM EV owners will need to purchase a Combined Charging System (CCS) to North American Charging Standard (NACS) adapter for $225. Unlike Ford and Rivian, GM is not offering these adapters for free. The adapters are available through GM's app and will be shipped to owners' homes until the end of the year.

GM had initially planned to provide Supercharger access by Spring 2024, but the rollout was delayed by three months for additional testing to ensure a consistent user experience. However, the company did not implement the plug-and-charge feature, which allows automatic charging authorization and payment, meaning GM owners will have to use their vehicle's app or the Tesla app to initiate charging.

This Supercharger access is part of GM's broader charging strategy, which includes partnerships with EVGo and Ionity, aiming to build 30,000 fast chargers by 2030. These efforts aim to enhance the overall charging infrastructure, especially for urban buyers who may not have access to home charging. While GM focuses on long-term solutions, the Supercharger network offers an immediate stopgap, providing reliable fast charging until more options become available.
