The Apollo IE Looks Even Crazier as a Race Car

The company, which was born out of former supercar maker Gumpert after it went bankrupt, recently completed a test of a race-spec Apollo Intensa at the Lausitzring in Germany. The race car tested alongside a road-going Apollo IE, which continues to undergo development as the German company prepares to put the 780 hp supercar into production. Apollo says the test was for collecting “further data to analyze the thermal and aerodynamics, as well as testing recent updates,” to the IE.

“During this endurance test we also conducted in-depth analysis on recent significant engineering advancements that will be implemented prior to production commencing next year,” said Apollo CMO Ryan Berris. “We look forward to revealing further details on these these cutting edge developments in the coming months.”

German engineering company HWA is helping Apollo put the finishes touches on the road car and is also helping with the development of the race car. HWA are masters of motorsports development, currently operating the Mercedes-AMG DTM program and providing technical know how to the Venturi Formula E team. They also provide engineering expertise to Formula 3 teams and consulted with Mercedes on the development of the AMG GT3.

“We are very pleased with the progress at this recent test as another round of dynamic development in collaboration with our technical partner, HWA AG is completed,” said Apollo chairman Norman Choi. “This program is operating at the highest level and we are thoroughly testing the cars in both road and track use cases prior to beginning production. It is a pleasure for us to share a peak behind the scenes to the public and our many fans so they can get a better sense of the magnitude of the program and the process.”

It’s not clear what race series the Apollo IE could compete in, but the platform may be well-suited to GT3 or GTE class racing.
