The Maserati Quattroporte has been facelifted for the first time since its launch three and a half years ago.

The large executive sedan was falling seriously behind in its segment, but the updates help bring it up to speed.

Maserati calls it a “substantial restyling,” but the changes are subtle. On the outside, the Quattroporte gets a revised bumper design with a more aggressive shark nose and chrome accents. Matte black trim is now used on the side skirts, extractor, and side mirrors. Behind that aggressive grille, a new adjustable air shutter has been added to help reduce aerodynamic drag by 10 percent.

Inside, the Quattroporte gets a revised center console that makes the cabin look much more upscale. The 8.4-inch touchscreen now has a prettier housing and the buttons have been modernized and have a better layout that will make them easier to use. The electronic parking brake has also been moved and replaced by a rotary knob for volume and function control.

The UConnect-based infotainment system is now compatible with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto.

More importantly, the Quattroporte gets a handful of safety upgrades in the form of optional driver assistance technology, which includes adaptive cruise control with stop and go, lane departure warning, forward collision alert, automatic emergency braking, and a surround-view camera. All Quattroporte sedans also get a new air quality sensor that prevents polluted air from entering the cabin.

The Quattroporte gets no powertrain changes, but the top speeds have been increased across the range: Top speed for the 3.8L V8 is now 193 mph and 178 mph for the S and Q4 3.0L V6 models. Power for the other 3.0L V6 has been bumped by 20 hp to 350 hp and top speed has increased to 168 mph.

Two new trims that bring cosmetic enhancements, GranLusso and GranSport, are also available. The refreshed Maserati Quattroporte will be available starting this month.
