2023 Mercedes-AMG C43 Review: Changing Sides
This car is here to let us know downsizing isn’t all bad.
When Mercedes revealed the current C-Class two years ago, it confirmed the rumors: the engine lineup would be all four-cylinders, all the time. Goodbye six- and eight-cylinder AMGs. The 2023 Mercedes-AMG C43—the “entry” level of the Affalterbach-fettled models—nonetheless boasts more power care of a clever electric turbo setup, plus a tweaked suspension promising more agility.
Despite all the tricks up its sleeves, the C43 ends up feeling muddled and confused. This car makes a statement in the ICE vs EV debate—just not the one we expected.

5 Surprising Mercs the 2023 Mercedes-AMG C43 Out-Sprints
Say it with us now: new car quick.
Mercedes has dropped an incredibly powerful four-cylinder into the latest AMG C43. We’ve driven it and while we had our reservations about other aspects of the compact sedan, its power was not one of them. In fact, the downsizing under the hood has resulted in a downsizing of the acceleration figures, too. To emphasize the quickness, we’ve rounded up a list of five of the C43’s siblings—with a combined cylinder count of 38—that it could show a set of taillights to.

2022 Mercedes-Benz C300 vs 2022 Volvo S60 Comparison
We use “premium” and “luxury” interchangeably these days. But the 2022 Mercedes-Benz C300 and 2022 Volvo S60 show just how different these two terms can be.
Mercedes has redone its smallest rear-drive model for this year. As has long been the case, the new C-Class brings more than a hint of the S-Class, the de facto luxury car poster child, to the compact sedan segment. It’s smooth, it coddles its passengers, and it has a reputation for quality.
So does the Volvo S60. In fact, we’d call Volvo’s smallest sedan one of the industry’s underdogs. Criminally overlooked, this handsome four-door has a lot to offer, if not the badge kudos that come with a brand new Merc.
Is there clear air between the premium Volvo and the luxury Benz? How much more car can you get if you’re willing to look beyond the Germans? Managing editor Mike Schlee and I spent a week finding out.
