The 2024 Abu Dhabi Grand Prix marks the end of an era for Formula 1 as Lewis Hamilton wraps up his stint with Mercedes-AMG Petronas. After a storied partnership that delivered six championships and countless records, Hamilton will move to Ferrari for the 2025 season.

Hamilton’s Ferrari Gamble

Hamilton’s Ferrari move is already being viewed through two lenses. On one side, it’s a chance for the seven-time world champion to grab one final title before the new 2026 regulations potentially shake up the order of things. On the other, tensions could arise as Leclerc adjusts to sharing top billing—or losing it—with one of F1’s most celebrated drivers.

Hamilton will need to capitalize on Ferrari’s improved competitiveness, evident in their late-season strides, to have a shot at glory. However, Lewis has struggled with the move to ground effect aerodynamic cars which are much more pitch-sensitive than in previous years, requiring a rewiring of his driving technique, as evidenced by the last three seasons.

Perez’s F1 Career in Jeopardy

While Hamilton’s future is set, Sergio Perez’s F1 career seems all but over. Persistent rumors indicate Red Bull will part ways with the Mexican driver after a disappointing season plagued by inconsistencies. Liam Lawson, who impressed during his brief appearances this year, is expected to take Perez’s seat, with Isaac Hadjar reportedly in line to join AlphaTauri. Meanwhile, Japanese driver Yuki Tsunoda may remain with the team, though his long-term prospects appear tied to Honda’s partnership with Aston Martin in 2026.

As for Perez, speculation is rife that he could transition to IndyCar, where his popularity and experience could make him a standout competitor. A potential ambassadorial role with Red Bull has also been floated, ensuring the brand continues to capitalize on his massive fanbase in Mexico.

2024: The Year of Driver Shakeups

The 2024 season will bring significant driver changes after the relatively stable 2023 grid. With veterans like Valtteri Bottas, Kevin Magnussen, and Daniel Ricciardo stepping away from F1, new faces will have a chance to prove themselves. Notably, Magnussen has already secured a seat with BMW’s hypercar program in the World Endurance Championship, while rumors swirl about which rookies will cement their spots in the series.

Looking Ahead to 2025

As the dust settles on 2024, the 2025 season promises one of the most competitive grids in years. With Max Verstappen at the helm, Red Bull remains the team to beat, but Mercedes, Ferrari, and McLaren have shown flashes of brilliance that hint at an even closer fight next year. The prospect of a four-way battle for the championship has fans eagerly anticipating the new season.
